This course offers veterinarians a unique perspective on cytology from both an internist and a clinical pathologist teaching in tandem. This allows for discussion of:
- how to obtain diagnostic samples.
- how to interpret cytology in conjunction with history, physical exam, laboratory data, and diagnostic imaging.
- how to use cytologic information to optimize a treatment plan.

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- learn indications for cytology.
- learn how to obtain and process samples for either in-clinic or commercial laboratory.
- learn the pros and cons of cytology vs. histopathology.
- how to classify samples as inflammatory, hyperplastic, or neoplastic.
- how to classify neoplasms as epithelial, spindle cells, discrete round cells.

- how to obtain and process samples for fluid analysis for either in-clinic or commercial laboratory.
- how to classify fluid as hemorrhagic, transudate, modifies transudate, chylous, exudate, or neoplastic effusion.
- how to use the fluid analysis results to help rank the differential diagnosis list for a patient.

Adam Honeckman joined the VIN team of consultants in 2008. He graduated from Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1992 and completed an internship at Purdue in 1993. After 4 years of general practice in Chicago, he began a small animal internal medicine residency at the prestigious Animal Medical Center in New York City. He currently owns and operates a mobile internal medicine practice in the Orlando area. Rebekah G. Gunn-Christie received her DVM from North Carolina State University in 2004 and completed a Clinical Pathology residency at the University of Florida in 2007. Dr. Gunn-Christie is a diplomate of the ACVP in clinical pathology. Dr. Gunn-Christie is currently employed by Antech Diagnostics and is a VIN consultant. She spends her spare time homesteading, taking care of her chickens, bees and garden. Total CE Credit: 8
