is up to 1 hour in length.

This
basic course will be open to all veterinary staff that participate in patient care.

Course Description:
Learn how to effectively adapt and enrich the veterinary environment to allow for modern, low stress patient care. Relaxed and cooperative patients can receive more thorough treatment thereby improving health outcomes and building revenue. Staff experiences less stress and fewer injuries when patients are easier to handle. Clients want their pets to be able to receive treatment without struggle, discomfort and fear. All of these benefits and more can be gained through implementation of the knowledge, skills and techniques discussed in this course.
Week 1 (Real Time Session November 28): Fearful Fido and Stressed-out Sheba
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Recognize instinctive (species-specific) needs for patients: canine and feline
- Identify how fear and stress tress influences patient behavior
- Describe how patients develop fear of the veterinary experience (while some do not)
- List the impacts of fear and stress beyond a single patient visit
Week 2 (Real Time Session December 5):
What Does YOUR Patient Perceive?
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Recognize subtle (early) signs of fear and stress in canine and feline patients
- Assess the patient�s possible sensory experience of their veterinary facility
- Develop techniques to modify the veterinary environment to promote patient well-being
Week 3 (Real Time Session December 12):
Champion the Most Challenged Patients
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Determine methods to improve the veterinary experience for challenging patients: Aggression, concurrent behavior problems, geriatric, boarding, pre/post-surgical, chronic illness, etc
Week 4 (Real Time Session December 19):
Planning, Promoting and Assessing Environmental Improvements
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Discuss areas where their veterinary environment can be improved
- Develop a proposal for implementation of an environmental improvement plan
- Employ methods to enable successful implementation by staff and clients
- Evaluate goals met and those needing consideration
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Instructor:
Sherrie Yuschak, AAS, RVT, VTS (Behavior), KPA-CTP is employed by North Carolina State University and works remotely for the Behavioral Medicine Service providing expertise in canine learning theory and application as part of a research team. Her previous duties at North Carolina State include patient behavior modification and client, student and staff education. Low stress veterinary handling and improved patient welfare is a priority to Sherrie and she serves on the Fear Free? Initiative Task Force. Sherrie is also a faculty member of the Karen Pryor Academy for Professional Dog Trainers. Active in the veterinary community, Sherrie holds board positions and membership on many technician and behavior organizations.

- Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to
VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course
must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a
VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
- Each enrollee must be able to receive emails from @vspn.org
