OPTIONS FOR HANDLING NATIONAL OPIOID SHORTAGE

Due to the national shortage of Schedule II opioids, many practices are unable to get medications such as morphine, hydromorphone, and fentanyl for the foreseeable future. Options for practitioners include the following.

  • Be flexible with the opioids you do have.
  • Avoid use of opioids for sedation.
  • Increase local and regional analgesia.
  • Increase use of analgesic adjuncts.

The VIN anesthesia consultants have planned a Rounds Session to discuss this issue for January 2018. Keep an eye on the Rounds schedule for the exact date and time.
