Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate course will be open to veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists interested in the rational use of antibiotics.
VIN CE Course: Open to veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists. This course is approved by RACE for veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists. (RACE 22-29167)

Course Information:
This interactive case-based session will discuss classification of antibiotics, mechanism of action, and an evidence-based way to choose treatment in a variety of diseases commonly seen in the ER setting. We will address the real issue of needing to use antibiotics immediately in septic patients but the difficulty in always differentiating those patients who have bacterial diseases and those who do not. We will discuss concepts of antibiotic resistance and how to maximize treatment success while minimizing risk of resistance.

About the Presenter:
Beth Davidow, DVM DACVECC is currently the Director of Medical Quality for BluePearl Veterinary Partners. She is a 1995 graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University. She moved to Seattle, Washington after graduation and worked in a primary care small animal and exotic clinic, volunteered at the Woodland Park Zoo, and then started working in an emergency hospital. She realized she was an adrenaline junkie and started an ECC residency at Dove Lewis Emergency Animal Hospital in Portland, Oregon, passing boards in 2002. She founded Animal Critical Care and Emergency Services (ACCES) in Seattle in 2003, the ACCES Blood Bank in 2004, and a second hospital location, ACCES- Renton in 2010. The hospitals merged with BluePearl in 2013. Dr. Davidow is a frequent speaker locally and at national meetings. She has a strong interest in transfusion medicine, appropriate antibiotic usage, and quality assurance. She has been a consultant on VIN since 2002.

  1. Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
  2. Each enrollee must be able to receive emails from @vspn.org and @vin.com addresses. Email is our major form of communication with participants; personal emails are highly recommended rather than clinic/hospital email addresses.
  3. Each person is individually responsible for his/her own registration. To ensure that all information received is secure and correct, please do not enroll for a course on behalf of another individual.
