Course Open: November 24-December 18, 2020
Real Time Sessions (RTS): Tuesdays, December 1 and 8, 2020; 7:00-8:30 pm ET (USA)
Course RTS Times in Your Area: World Clock Converter Level and Prerequisites: This basic course will be open to veterinarians actively interested in antimicrobial resistance stewardship.
VIN CE Course: Open to veterinarians. This course has been submitted for RACE approval for veterinarians. Course Information:
Antimicrobial resistance is an increasing problem in both human and veterinary medicine. Any time an antimicrobial is used, it has the potential to select for resistant bacteria by killing or inhibiting sensitive bacteria and leaving behind resistant organisms. As a result, medicines may become ineffective and infections will persist, increasing recovery times, cost and morbidity. It is critical that we use these lifesaving drugs thoughtfully and plan the most appropriate course of therapy. This course will discuss the mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance, the use of "best" practices to mitigate the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance. Week 1 (Real Time Session December 1, 2020)

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Understand the importance of preventing antimicrobial resistance.
- Describe what resistance is, how and why it occurs, and when antimicrobial use is required.
- Explain empirical vs inductive choice of antimicrobials.
- Explain how to get the most information out of an MIC (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration) result.
Presenter: Roselle Busch DVM, DACVIM (Large Animal Internal Medicine)
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Identify when and which antimicrobials are appropriate for
large animal diseases, including the following scenarios:

Rosie Busch recently joined UC Cooperative Extension and the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine as the Specialist in Sheep and Goat Herd Health and Production. She received her BS in Animal Science and her DVM from UC Davis. She practiced in a rural mixed animal clinic in Hollister, CA before returning to UC Davis to complete a residency in Large Animal Internal Medicine focusing on livestock. Following the residency, Dr. Busch continued working in the Livestock Medicine & Surgery service, training veterinary students and residents. When California passed Senate Bill SB27, the California Department of Food and Agriculture established the Antimicrobial Use and Stewardship program and Dr. Busch joined a team of scientists to develop evidence-based resources on antimicrobial stewardship for veterinarians and ranchers. Currently at UC Davis, she is collaborating on a number of studies investigating milk quality, udder health, and responsible antibiotic use in sheep and goats. Total CE Credit: 3
