Course Information:
Chronic systemic arterial hypertension is a common yet underdiagnosed condition that increases morbidity and SAIMdecreases longevity of our veterinary patients. Participants of this course will gain readily applicable clinical insight on the importance of identifying and managing hypertension in dogs and cats. The first session will review staging and classification levels of hypertension while considering the affects of sustained hypertension on target organ systems including renal, cardiac, neurologic, and ocular structures. The following session will look at best practices for obtaining accurate blood pressure readings, implementing screening programs that leverage your staff’s skills, and treatment options for the routine, refractory, and emergent cases.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • define systemic arterial hypertension.
  • identify high risk populations of dogs and cats for diagnostic screening of systemic hypertension.
  • understand the consequences of sustained systemic arterial hypertension, including damage to major target organs.
  • perform a blood pressure assessment on dogs and cats in their practice.
  • implement a routine diagnostic screening program for both cats and dogs in their daily practice.
  • understand the options for initial therapy and troubleshoot refractory cases.
  • identify when emergency management of hypertension is necessary and understand the goals of emergency treatment.

Level and Prerequisites: This basic VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in canine and feline hypertension.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 4 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-1200982)
