Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience in your CE course, we request you attend a Practice Session prior to the first Real Time Session. Please arrive promptly at the start time; each Practice Session is up to 1 hour in length. For more information, please visit the CE Practice Area.

*The instructor for this course will be using audio which will require you to have a headset or speakers to listen. If you have any concerns regarding your computer's audio capabilities, please be sure to attend one of the Practice Sessions.

Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate course includes a brief review of the fundamentals of arithmetic leading to interactive study of calculations frequently performed by veterinary technicians and assistants in veterinary practice. Participants should have a good grasp of fundamental concepts and successful completion of a high school or college algebra class is strongly recommended.

Course Description:
This six-hour skills development course reviews the fundamentals of math and is designed to help students learn to work through the types of calculations frequently performed by veterinary technicians and assistants in veterinary practice. There will be a review of basic math concepts and an introduction to the formulas and skills necessary to solve drug and fluid dosage problems.

Week 1 (Real Time Session September 7): Math Assessment and Review of Decimal Numbers, Fractions, and Percentages

Week 4 (Real Time Session September 28): IV Fluid Calculations
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Instructor:
Elizabeth Warren, LVT has been a credentialed veterinary technician in Texas since 1995, first as an RVT and currently as an LVT, and a community college instructor since 1999. She teaches the following courses at Austin Community College in the veterinary assistant certificate program which she co-developed in 1999: Veterinary Pharmacology, Pharmacological Calculations, Nutrition, and Clinical Pathology; Canine and Feline Clinical Management and Veterinary Anesthesia and Surgical Assistance, and Introduction to Veterinary Technology. She also assisted with curriculum development for ACC's AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program in 2013. She has worked as an emergency veterinary technician part-time at the Emergency Animal Hospital of Northwest Austin since 2001, and as a volunteer moderator at the Veterinary Support Personnel Network since 2000.

Ms. Warren holds an AAS in veterinary technology from San Juan College and will graduate with a BA in Liberal Arts from Thomas Edison State University in September 2016. She is a contributing author to several publications, including The VSPN Notebook, Mosby's Comprehensive Review for Veterinary Technicians (pharmacology chapter), Tasks for the Veterinary Assistant (post-operative techniques chapter), Texas Veterinarian magazine, Veterinary Technician magazine, and Technically Speaking newsletter. She has contributed test items to the Texas RVT (TVMA) exam and the Veterinary Technician National Exam (AAVSB).

  1. Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
  2. Each enrollee must be able to receive emails from @vspn.org and @vin.com addresses. Email is our major form of communication with participants; personal emails are highly recommended rather than clinic/hospital email addresses.
  3. Each person is individually responsible for his/her own registration. To ensure that all information received is secure and correct, please do not enroll for a course on behalf of another individual.
