Level and Prerequisites:
This
basic course is designed to provide an overview of the pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus, clinical signs, client education and home care.
VSPN CE Course: Open to VIN and VSPN members.
This course has been submitted for RACE approval for veterinary technicians/technologists.
Course Description:
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a relatively common problem in small animal practice. The prospect of long term diabetic care can be very intimidating to owners, as a higher level of management and monitoring is required compared to other conditions. An educated and well-trained staff can help calm these concerns and promote optimal long term care. This course will cover the pathophysiology, how the veterinarian diagnoses, and treatment a veterinarian may prescribe of this condition with an emphasis on client education and communication.
Week 1 (Real Time Session April 11):
Pathophysiology
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Understand the structure/function of the normal pancreas and the pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus
Week 2 (Real Time Session April 18):
Diabetes Mellitus in the Canine Patient
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Understand the diagnosis and management of diabetes mellitus as it pertains to the canine patient
Week 3 (Real Time Session April 25):
Diabetes Mellitus in the Feline Patient
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Understand the diagnosis and management of DM as it pertains to the feline patient
Week 4 (Real Time Session May 2):
Client Education and Long-term Management
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Understand strategies for client communication in the period surrounding initial diagnosis and during the long term management of the patient
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

in the course library prior to each Real Time Session and are

Thomas Hansen, DVM, DABVP (Canine and Feline Practice) is a graduate of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (Canine and Feline Practice). He is an emergency veterinarian in San Francisco

- Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to
