Study Title.
The Broad Institute and Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine are initiating a study to look at the genetics behind the occurrence of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in Pembroke Welsh Corgis. The Broad Institute and the lab of Kerstin Lindblad-Toh have a history of identifying the genetic cause of a variety of traits and disease states in various dog breeds. Previous work with the Corgis helped identify the genetic cause for degenerative myelopathy. In this new study we will focus on the genetic cause of PDAs in Pembroke Welsh Corgis. PDA is the most common cardiac defect in dogs and multiple dog breeds appear to be susceptible to PDAs, including Pembroke Welsh Corgis. We have already started collecting samples from affected Corgis, but we require more samples in order to identify the genetic cause.

Study Design:
Prospective Genome-wide Association Study

Inclusion Criteria:

• Pembroke Welsh Corgis with PDA (either repaired or unrepaired)

Study Controls:
Once affected dogs have been collected, control Corgis will be recruited from Corgi clubs.

Samples:
If you identify any Corgis with a documented PDA, please consider helping us out by submitting a blood sample. For our studies, we require one 5 ml blood sample in an EDTA tube and a signed owner consent form. It is our hope that we will be able to identify the genetic cause of the PDA in Corgis in order to improve the health of the breed and also to further our understanding of human PDAs.
