Course Information:
The majority of this course will cover canine brachycephalic patients with brief mention of brachycephalic felines. Brachycephalic patients pose a great challenge with respect to sedation and anesthesia. We will review the anatomy and physiology of brachycephalic patients and how exactly this can derail a smooth sedation or anesthetic episode. We will review the literature to discuss what factors are associated with increased morbidity and mortality in brachycephalic patients and what factors may mitigate it. Sample protocols and management techniques, along with their costs and benefits, will also be discussed.


Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • understand that brachycephalic patients pose an increased anesthetic risk, and explain why with respect to their anatomy and physiology.
  • understand which sedative and anesthetic drugs to use and which to avoid for brachycephalic patients.
  • utilize techniques that can mitigate the risk of regurgitation and upper airway obstruction during sedation and anesthetic recovery of brachycephalic patients..


Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in anesthesia.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 1.5 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-1009824)

Week 1 (Real Time Session August 21, 2023): Brachycephalic Anesthesia
Presenter: Kimberly Hassen, DVM, ACVAA
This session will cover mainly canine brachycephalic patients with brief mention of brachycephalic felines. The session will include a discussion of anatomy and physiology of brachycephalic patients and how this affects anesthetic their management; appropriate and inappropriate sedation and anesthetic drugs; and techniques the practitioner can add to his/her practice to mitigate the additional anesthetic risk posed by brachycephalic patients.
