This
basic course will be open to veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists
actively interested in the supportive medical treatment of amphibians.
No previous amphibian handling or experience is necessary.

Course Information:
This course is designed to provide basic information on amphibians.
We will cover basic amphibian biology, anatomy, husbandry specifics,
breeding and raising of young, and common diseases and treatments you
may see in private practice or breeding facilities.
Week 1 (Real Time Session January 9, 2018):
Amphibians in Private Practice
Presenter: Ken Harkewicz
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- discuss where pet amphibians can be obtained.
- discuss any legal concerns regarding the origins of the pet and/or ownership of the pet.
- explain how to safely transport the pet amphibian to the veterinary office/hospital.
- list some tips and suggestions to improve the intake experience for both the pet and the client.
- list equipment a veterinary practice that accepts amphibian patients might consider having on hand.
Week 2 (Real Time Session January 16, 2018):
Frogs and Toads
Presenter: Ken Harkewicz
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- list the species of frogs and toads commonly kept as pets by hobbyists and breeders.
- recognize what constitutes normal appearance and behavior of pet frogs and toads.
- ask species relevant questions when taking a history.
- discuss typical signs/symptoms of illness, injury, and disease in these pets.
- utilize safety precautions when handling the pet and performing a physical exam.
Week 3 (Real Time Session January 23, 2018):
Salamanders, Neotenic Salamanders, and Caecilians

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- list the species of salamander, neotenic salamander, and caecilian commonly
kept as pets by hobbyists and breeders.
- recognize what constitutes normal appearance and behavior of these pets.
- ask species relevant questions when taking a history.
- discuss typical signs/symptoms of illness, injury, and disease in these pets.
- safely perform a physical exam of the patient.
Week 4 (Real Time Session January 30, 2018):
Basic Amphibian Husbandry
Presenter: Ken Harkewicz
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- discuss the basics of amphibian husbandry.
- explain how to keep and maintain pet frogs, toads, salamanders,
neotenic salamanders, and caecilians.
- discuss the best food choices for these pets and where to find them.
- discuss the use of sublimates on food items.
- discuss various husbandry tips and tricks to improve quality of life for these pets.
Week 5 (Real Time Session February 6, 2018):
Selected Topics - Husbandry Issues, Breeding, and Common Diseases

Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- discuss common husbandry problems found in selected species.
- list the common diseases of selected amphibian species and their treatments.
- discuss the breeding of selected amphibian species.
- discuss the raising of young for selected amphibian species.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Presenter:
Kenneth Harkewicz attended the University of Pennsylvania's School
of Veterinary Medicine and upon graduating, entered a 20-month exotic animal
externship in Australia (Queensland and the Northern Territories).
He is an exotic animal veterinarian who has practiced in the California Bay Area since 1985.
For the past 20 years, he has been the Senior Exotic Veterinarian at Berkeley Dog
and Cat Hospital, a 19-vet specialty and general practice hospital, where he is often
called upon to care for or consult on arthropod, amphibian, and reptile cases.
Dr. Harkewicz has served as a VIN (Veterinary Information Network) Consultant
on invertebrates from 1999 to present.
He oversees the health of the entire collection of exotic animals for the East Bay Vivarium,
Wonder World Pet Supply in Richmond, California - a major importer/exporter of these pets.
He is the one of the few California Bay Area veterinarians who treats and examines invertebrate pets.
Dr. Harkewicz cares for an extensive collection of reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates
both at home and at work. He has been keeping and breeding these exotic pets for over 40 years
and is a frequent lecturer to veterinary students, technicians, and media outlets (TV, Newspapers, Magazines).
