Level and Prerequisites:
This
basic course will be open to veterinarians actively interested
in the role of the general practitioner in the support and recommendation of radiation
oncology and how it is used as part of comprehensive cancer care for the
veterinary patient.

This course has been submitted for RACE approval for veterinarians.
Course Information:
This course will cover topics such as the basics of radiation oncology, how it
can be used and what tumors are most appropriate to target with this therapy.
Topics will include the types of cancer most commonly treated with radiation as
well as the most effective combination treatments available (i.e. surgery,
chemotherapy and immunotherapy). Novel approaches will also be covered so
attendees will understand the most cutting-edge techniques available to
veterinary patients. No prerequisite knowledge is required to attend this course.
Week 1 (Real Time Session June 7, 2018):
Introduction to Radiation Oncology - The basics and how it's used in practice

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- List the most common types of radiation therapy used in veterinary medicine
- Understand the basic science behind radiation therapy
- Have a general understanding of which tumors are most commonly treated with radiation
- Dispel common myths and misunderstandings that may surround radiation therapy
Week 2 (Real Time Session June 14, 2018):
Skin and Bones - Mast cell tumors, soft tissue sarcomas, and osteosarcoma

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Effectively plan a surgery and educate clients on adjunctive treatment
- Understand how to interpret a histopathology report and grading systems
- Understand typical oncology treatment protocols for each cancer
- Understand novel treatment options that were not previously available
Week 3 (Real Time Session June 21, 2018):
From the Neck Up - Nasal, oral, thyroid, and brain cancer

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- List the most common types of head and neck cancer in veterinary patients
- Understand the best times to cut, and the worst times to cut
- Educate clients on expected treatment options and prognosis
Week 4 (Real Time Session June 28, 2018):
Tumors from Down Under - Urogenital and anal cancer

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Understand historical treatments and why we're moving in other directions
- Understand which radiation treatment is appropriate for which tumor
- Understand concurrent treatments that may be used in addition to radiation therapy
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Presenter:
Siobhan Haney received a BS from The George Washington University,
where she was the recipient of an NCAA Div. I full athletic scholarship for gymnastics.
She then attended Rutgers University in Camden, NJ for the completion of an MS in
Biology, and graduated from the Executive MBA program at the Pennsylvania State
University in 2014. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a VMD
in 2004. After completing a medical and surgical internship at Red Bank Veterinary
Hospital, she completed a residency in Radiation Oncology at Tufts University
and became board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Radiology
(Radiation Oncology) in 2008.
Dr. Haney has authored/ coauthored several scientific studies in multiple peer-reviewed
journals and actively participates in ongoing multi-institutional clinical trials.
She has presented scientific research at the annual Veterinary Cancer Society meeting
and is an active member of the Veterinary Radiation Therapy Oncology Group.
She frequently lectures on Radiation Oncology subjects both nationally and
internationally. Dr. Haney has been practicing radiation oncology in the
mid-Atlantic region since 2007. She currently practices at Hope Veterinary
Specialists and the Veterinary CyberKnife Cancer Center in Pennsylvania where
she is part of a larger group of medical and radiation oncologists.
Her professional interests include stereotactic radiotherapy and palliative
care/quality of life for cancer patients.
