This book is a departure from the usual reproduction or bovine book in that it strives to provide additional skills and insights for up-to-date service delivery and practice organization. No parts of prior editions are used in this version, and an entirely new team of contributors is utilized.

The goal is a revision of practice skills and relevant information. Included are such topics as; leadership, marketing, communication, and business organization. There is an emphasis on herd health management and medicine. Technical skills are outlined, including field necropsy and sample collection, on-site pain management and selection of appropriate antimicrobials.

There are 57 chapters, each dedicated to specific learning objectives exposing the author’s intent. The book is divided into six Sections; Modern Cattle Practice and Education, Professional Skills, Clinical Skills, Herd Health, Dairy Herd Health and, Beef Herd Health.

The author strays from the traditional information that can be found in other books and follows a more useful goal of providing the tools necessary to support a cattle practice.

This may not be the book you run to when you have an emergency to attend, but one you should sit and read in those quiet moments when you can spare some time. It might be a good idea to also have a tablet on hand to make notes and to list equipment to buy.

On the list of interesting chapters, you might want to read up on, Bull Health and Breeding Soundness, Cattle Poisoning, Welfare and Cattle Behavior, just for starters. The entire book is a study in optimizing your time and effectiveness in the bovine field.

The last chapter is a Vade Mecum of medical conditions of cattle laid out in a loose pattern consisting of Common Synonyms, Disease Profile, Clinical Findings, Principal Differential Diagnosis, Etiology, Post-Mortem Findings, Diagnosis, Treatment and, Control. Lists are not all identical in format but relate to the specific findings.

This is a book that differs from the regulation husbandry and disease text in that it provides information on how to best utilize your knowledge of bovine medicine to also enhance the experience for the animal and the owner.
