Level and Prerequisites: This basic course will appeal to seasoned, newly minted and returning small animal clinicians alike - anyone interested in deepening their understanding of decision making that enhances clinical anesthesia safety:
  • Veterinarians new to and re-acquainting themselves with small animal practice will find a valuable overview of drugs and drug selection to optimize anesthesia management.
  • Experienced practitioners will find this course to be helpful optimizing existing anesthesia protocols and developing new protocols with an introduction to newly available anesthetic drugs.
VIN CE Course: Open to veterinarians and licensed or experienced (5 years suggested) veterinary staff. Veterinary staff may only enroll if they are associated with an enrolled veterinarian. Veterinary staff need to provide the name of their veterinarian in the comment section during the enrollment process. Course Information:
This course provides an overview of anesthesia drugs, old and new, with a focus on drug selection to optimize anesthesia management in cats, dogs and rabbits. Case studies with varying levels of complexity and patient compromise will provide examples for participants to discuss pros and cons of drug selection.

Week 1 (Real Time Session October 6, 2020): Pre-anesthesia Medication (Oral and Injectable)

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
  • modify their existing pre-anesthesia protocols to address nagging problems or persistent deficiencies.
  • choose whether newer anesthesia drugs or techniques should be incorporated into their current anesthesia protocols.
  • adjust their anesthesia drug dosing regimens and drug timing to fit patient safety needs.

Week 2 (Real Time Session October 13, 2020): Induction and Maintenance of Anesthesia

  • modify their existing anesthesia induction and maintenance protocols to address nagging problems or persistent deficiencies.

  • adjust their anesthesia induction drug dosing and anesthesia maintenance regimens.

Week 3 (Real Time Session October 20, 2020): Peri-operative Pain Management & Recovery from Anesthesia

  • adjust their anesthesia and analgesia drug dosing regimens based on patient needs and drug availability.

Week 4 (Real Time Session October 27, 2020): Putting it All Together - Case Examples

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
  • use information learned in the course to improve quality and safety of anesthesia delivery and address nagging problems or persistent deficiencies.
  • choose whether newer anesthesia drugs or techniques should be incorporated into their current anesthesia protocols.
  • adjust their anesthesia and analgesia drug dosing regimens to specific case use in their practice.

About the Presenters:
Nancy Brock, who is originally from Montreal, obtained her DVM degree from the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph in 1982. She completed a residency in anesthesia and critical care at the University of California, Davis in 1988. In 1995, she became certified as a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia. Based in Eastern Ontario, Canada Dr. Brock provides veterinarians and their nursing staff with anesthesia assistance and expertise. This assistance comes in the form of case management through telemedicine, telephone consultation and the training of veterinarians and technicians in advanced anesthesia techniques. She is also the author of a quick reference anesthesia publication entitled Veterinary Anesthesia Update for small animal practitioners.

Lydia Love graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine in 2002. She has worked in a variety of clinical settings, including non-profit spay-neuter practice; small animal relief & emergency work; private specialty referral practice; and academic practice, most recently, at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She has been board certified by the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia since 2010.

Kris Kruse-Elliott received her DVM from Oregon State University in 1984. The following year was spent in mixed animal practice in Seattle, WA before moving on to advanced specialty training in anesthesiology. She completed her anesthesia residency at North Carolina State University from 1985-1988, becoming board certified and a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia in 1989. Dr. Kruse received her PhD in pulmonary physiology from North Carolina State University in 1992 and joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison the same year where she taught for 15 years. She is currently based in Reno, NV and commutes to the Bay Area where she works in private specialty practice.
