Level and Prerequisites: This basic course will be open to general practice veterinarians actively interested in veterinary dentistry. Participants in the course should have an interest in taking better care of the dental needs of their patients. Although not required, it is strongly recommended that participants take the first module, DENT109-0919: Veterinary Dentistry for the General Practitioner - Module 1, prior to enrolling in this course.

Course Information:
The second of 2 modules, this course is designed to allow discussions of current techniques used in veterinary dentistry. Veterinarians practicing all levels of veterinary dentistry are invited to participate, from the veterinarian just interested in getting started in veterinary dentistry to the Board-Certified Veterinary Dentist. The course will cover how to read intraoral radiographs, normal radiographic anatomy, radiographic diagnosis of common intraoral disease, indications for exodontia, extraction equipment and extraction techniques, indications, drugs and landmarks for local anesthesia, treatment of feline tooth resorption and stomatitis.

Week 1 (Real Time Session November 18, 2019): Radiographic Interpretation

Advanced Veterinary Dentistry Dental Procedures: Periodontics, Endodontics, Restorations, and Orthodontics

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
  • recognize normal radiographic anatomy
  • understand the fundamentals of dental radiographic interpretation: periodontics, endodontics, and orthodontics
Week 2 (Real Time Session December 2, 2019): Exodontics

Format: Audio
Required Reading (prior to December 2, 2019 Real Time Session):
Chapter 12: Exodontics (Extractions)

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
  • describe the indications for exodontias
  • describe the instrumentation for exodontias
  • understand simple extraction techniques
  • understand surgical extraction techniques
  • understand how to perform multiple root extractions
  • understand how to perform techniques for specific teeth
  • recognize the indications for exodontia
  • understand the equipment and techniques for simple and surgical extractions
Week 3 (Real Time Session December 9, 2019): Local Anesthesia

Chapter 5: Local Anesthesia

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
  • describe the advantages of local dental blocks
  • describe the various local anesthesia agents
  • describe what each nerve block does
  • understand the techniques used
Week 4 (Real Time Session December 16, 2019): Feline Dentistry

Chapter 10: Feline Dentistry

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
  • describe current concepts in the treatment of tooth resorption and stomatitis in the feline
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. To learn more about the requirements for earning a CE certificate, please refer to Receiving Your CE Credit and Course Completion Certificate.

Course Materials: Course materials will be available in the course library prior to each Real Time Session.
Required Textbook: Participants are responsible for acquiring a copy of the required course textbook prior to the first real time session.

About the Presenter:
Steve Holmstrom was one of the two original VIN Dental Consultants. He has co-authored the textbook which the course is based on, Veterinary Dental Techniques, which is in its 3rd edition and in 4 languages. He has also authored Veterinary Dentistry for the Technician and Office Staff and edited two editions of Veterinary Clinics of North America.
