VIN DIAG215-0919: Correlating Gross Morphology to Cytopathology: How much can we learn?

The lectures for this course will be presented in an audio format using a webinar platform.

Enrollment is closed.
Presenters: Eric Snook, DVM, PhD, ACVP (Anatomic Pathology)
Britton P. Grasperge, DVM, PhD, ACVP (Clinical Pathology)
Course Open: September 3-27, 2019
Real Time Sessions (RTS): Tuesdays, September 10 and 17, 2019; 8:00-10:00 pm ET (USA)
Course RTS Times in Your Area: World Clock Converter

Level and Prerequisites: This basic course will be open to veterinarians actively interested in the correlation between gross lesions and cytopathology. It is recommended that veterinary students have previous course experience with cytology or gross pathology.
VIN CE Course: Open to veterinarians. This course is approved by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 22-37443)

Course Information:
Identifying a logical list of differential diagnoses for a gross lesion, based on general shape, color, texture and location is a key skill for the practicing clinician. Additionally, clinicians serve their clients well by efficiently evaluating cytologic preparations to develop a list of likely differentials prior to submission to a clinical pathologist to develop an effective treatment plan.

Week 1 (Real Time Session September 10, 2019): Neoplastic Lesions
Presenters: Britton Grasperge and Eric Snook
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
  • identify common neoplastic lesions and provide an appropriate differential list.
  • identify basic cytologic characteristics of cells/structures aspirated from lesions.
  • improve accuracy and skills in both gross and cytologic pathology.
Week 2 (Real Time Session September 17, 2019): Other Lesions
Presenters: Britton Grasperge and Eric Snook
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
  • describe common predilection sites for various infectious/inflammatory conditions.
  • understand the value of identifying a pustule, collarette, hyperkeratosis, et cetera on gross examination.
  • describe key cytologic features from different infectious/inflammatory conditions and their correlates from the gross examination.
  • identify specific non-infectious/non-inflammatory conditions that commonly arise.
  • describe specific cytologic criteria for these miscellaneous lesions.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. To learn more about the requirements for earning a CE certificate, please refer to Receiving Your CE Credit and Course Completion Certificate.

Course Materials: Course materials will be available in the course library prior to each Real Time Session.
Required Textbook(s): There is no required textbook for this course.

About the Presenters:
Eric Snook graduated from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2002 and practiced in small animal general practice and emergency in California prior to completing a residency in pathology at LSU in 2009, and his PhD in biomedical science from Tulane University in 2013. Currently he is a staff pathologist at Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (TVMDL) in College Station, Texas and receives specimens ranging from food animals to small animals and reptiles and amphibians as part of his daily caseload.

Britt Grasperge is a 2006 graduate of the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine. He completed a residency in veterinary clinical pathology at the same institution in 2009, while working towards his PhD on spotted fever group rickettsioses, which he completed in 2012.
