Level and Prerequisites: This basic course will be open to veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists actively interested in dialysis and related treatments.

Course Information:
This course is an introduction to dialysis and the related therapies used in veterinary medicine for management of acute kidney injury, drug overdose/toxin exposure, and immune-mediated diseases.

Week 1 (Real Time Session March 2, 2020): Introduction to Hemodialysis and it's Role in Kidney Disease

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
  • Describe, in general, how hemodialysis removes substances from the blood.
  • Describe, in general, the types of substances hemodialysis can remove, and what it can’t remove.
  • Recognize patients who may be candidates for hemodialysis.
  • Discuss, in general, the role of hemodialysis in management of kidney disease with a pet owner.
  • Discuss, in general, other aspects of care that may be involved for a patient receiving hemodialysis to treat kidney injury.

Week 2 (Real Time Session March 9, 2020): Hemoperfusion, Therapeutic Plasma Exchange, and the Role in Managing Poisoned Patients, and Patients with Immune-Mediated Disease

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
  • Describe, in general, how hemoperfusion and therapeutic plasma exchange remove substances from the blood.
  • Describe, in general, the types of substances that can be removed from the blood by hemoperfusion and therapeutic plasma exchange.
  • Describe, in general, how hemoperfusion and therapeutic plasma exchange are used to treat a poisoned patient.
  • Describe, in general, how therapeutic plasma exchange is used to treat patients with immune-mediated disease.
  • Discuss, in general, the role of hemoperfusion and therapeutic plasma exchange in the management of poisoning or immune-mediated disease with a pet owner.

About the Presenter(s):
Armi Pigott is a 2009 graduate of Western University of Health Sciences College of Veterinary Medicine. He completed his residency at the Animal Emergency Center and achieved board certification in the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care in 2014. He is currently a full-time clinically practicing Criticalist and mentors interns and ACVECC residents at Lakeshore Veterinary Specialists in Milwaukee, WI. His special interests include resuscitation from shock, advanced wound management, and care of the polytrauma patient.
