intermediate course will be
open to veterinarians actively interested in electrolyte disorders
for critically ill animals.

Course Information:
Electrolyte disorders are frequent in critically ill animals and
can result from a broad spectrum of diseases. This series of webinar
will cover the clinical approach to major disturbances in serum
sodium and potassium. Basic physiology of total body water
distribution as well as sodium and potassium homeostasis will
be reviewed. Treatment of those disorders will be discussed
along with clinical examples.
Week 1 (Real Time Session July 16, 2018):
Sodium/Potassium Disorders I

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- understand the principles of water distribution.
- review the differences between salt and water loss and pure water loss.
- realize the importance of dysnatremia in veterinary patients.
- outline the clinical approach to the treatment of patients with dysnatremia.
Week 2 (Real Time Session July 23, 2018):
Sodium/Potassium Disorders II
Presenter: Guillaume Hoareau, DVM, PhD
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- review potassium homeostasis.
- discuss the clinical presentation of patients with hyperkalemia or hypokalemia.
- outline state-of-the-art treatment of such patients.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Presenter:
Guillaume Hoareau is a diplomate of both the American and European
Colleges of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. He graduated from the Toulouse
National School of Veterinary Medicine (France). He completed a residency in emergency
and critical care at the University of California- Davis and obtained a PhD in
Translational Trauma and Critical Illness Research from the same institution.
He is currently an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education Post-Doctoral
Fellow in trauma and critical care research with the US Air Force and balances
his time between research and clinical work.
