Level and Prerequisites: This basic course will be open to veterinarians and veterinary support staff interested in managing bacterial disease in a honey bee colony.
VIN CE Course: Open to veterinarians and veterinary support staff. This course is approved by RACE for veterinarians and veterinary technician/technologist. (RACE 22-38539)

Course Information:
Veterinarians are needed to work with beekeepers to manage bacterial diseases. In this course we will cover the two bacterial honeybee diseases, focusing on their infection cycle, transmission, and care. Participants will learn how to identify signs of bacterial disease, carry out field testing, and how to best manage and control disease. We will cover antibiotic use and filling out orders for honeybee colonies.

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
  • List the major diseases of honey bees
  • Identify signs of diseased adult bees
  • Identify healthy brood
  • Identify visual signs of brood disease
  • List the field tests for diagnosis
  • Describe treatment options for disease
  • Outline the steps to writing a VFD or prescription for a honey bee colony

About the Presenter:
Meghan Milbrath has been keeping bees for over 20 years. She runs a beekeeping business in Munith, Michigan, where she keeps over 200 colonies and breeds queen bees. Dr. Milbrath works as an academic specialist at Michigan State University where she specializes in pollinator research and extension. Her academic focus is on transmission dynamics of environmentally acquired infectious diseases.
