Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate course will be open to veterinarians and veterinary students actively interested in equine nutrition. Participants in this course should be well versed in basic equine anatomy and physiology.
VIN CE Course: Open to veterinarians. This course is approved by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 22-33616)

Course Information:
Forage is an important part of the horse's ration. We will discuss forage quality as it relates to feeding horses and discuss how to balance a forage diet for a horse to ensure adequate nutrient provision.

Week 1 (Real Time Session August 28, 2018): Nutrition for the Adult Horse

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. About the Presenter(s):
Megan Shepherd graduated from the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine in 2006, then practiced at an equine private practice in Maryland for two years. She found a calling in nutrition and research and returned to Virginia-Maryland to complete a PhD in biomedical and veterinary sciences along with a comparative nutrition residency. Dr. Shepherd is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Nutrition and has been a faculty member as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Virginia-Maryland since 2012. As a faculty member Dr. Shepherd directs the comparative nutrition service and teaches nutrition to veterinary students.

  1. Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
  2. Each enrollee must be able to receive emails from @vspn.org and @vin.com addresses. Email is our major form of communication with participants; personal emails are highly recommended rather than clinic/hospital email addresses.
  3. Each person is individually responsible for his/her own registration. To ensure that all information received is secure and correct, please do not enroll for a course on behalf of another individual.
