Level and Prerequisites: This basic course will be open to veterinarians, veterinary technicians/technologists, and veterinary support staff actively interested in goat care and medicine.
VIN CE Course: Open to veterinarians, veterinary technicians/technologists, and support staff. This course has been submitted for RACE approval for veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists.

Course Information:
Goats are becoming popular companion animals in addition to being shown, and used for packing, weed control, meat, fiber, and milk production. Some owners and breeders consider them food/production animals while others think of their goats like a pet dog or cat. Their biology and medicine are very different from small animals and even cattle. This course is designed to help make veterinarians and their staff and team confident in working with goat patients and their owners, regardless of the intended purpose of the goat.

Week 1 (Real Time Session September 26, 2018): Introduction and Review of the Basics

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. About the Presenters:
Stacey Byers obtained her DVM from Washington State University and completed her agriculture animal internship and residency at WSU as well. She is boarded in large animal internal medicine (ACVIM). Dr. Byers recently was hired as an Associate Professor at St George's University School of Veterinary Medicine teaching in the Large Animal Medicine and Surgery Department. She also serves as a Consultant in the Ruminants and Swine folder on VIN. Previously Dr. Byers worked at Colorado State University in the Livestock Medicine and Surgery department and operated a livestock-oriented ambulatory practice.

Jean Feldman is a practicing veterinarian living in Western New York State. She started a mobile, large animal veterinary practice in 1985, caring for horses, llamas, cattle, pigs, sheep and goats. Her undergraduate work was done at D'Youville College (BA in Biology) and her DVM degree was conferred by Cornell University.

  1. Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
  2. Each enrollee must be able to receive emails from @vspn.org and @vin.com addresses. Email is our major form of communication with participants; personal emails are highly recommended rather than clinic/hospital email addresses.
  3. Each person is individually responsible for his/her own registration. To ensure that all information received is secure and correct, please do not enroll for a course on behalf of another individual.

"This program (RACE program number to be determined) has been submitted for approval by AAVSB RACE to offer a total of 6 CE Credits, with a maximum of 6 CE Credits being available to any individual veterinarian or veterinary technician/technologist##. This RACE approval is for the subject matter categories of: Scientific, using the delivery method of Interactive-Distance: (Web-based, Teleconference or Audio-Conference). This approval is valid in jurisdictions which recognize AAVSB RACE; however, participants are responsible for ascertaining each board's CE requirements."
