Level and Prerequisites: This basic course will be open to veterinarians and veterinary support staff actively interested in the basics of potbellied pig care and medicine.
VIN CE Course: Open to veterinarians and veterinary support staff. This course is approved by RACE for veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists. (RACE 22-43808)

Course Information:
Potbellied pigs are becoming popular companion animals and are being welcomed into more households each year. Most owners and breeders consider them to be like a pet dog or cat. Their biology and medicine are very different from small animals and this course is designed to help make veterinarians and their staff and team more confident in working with potbellied pig patients and their owners.

Week 1 (Real Time Session October 18, 2020): Potbellied Pigs I
Presenters: Jean Feldman and Stacey Byers
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
  • perform a thoughtful clinical examination of a potbellied pig.
  • use the proper restraint needed to perform various common procedures, including drawing blood, performing a physical examination and trimming feet.
  • discuss appropriate housing and fencing.

Week 2 (Real Time Session October 25, 2020): Potbellied Pigs II
Presenters: Jean Feldman and Stacey Byers
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
  • identify common medical and surgical problems in potbellied pigs.
  • discuss anesthetic protocols and common surgical problems commonly encountered in potbellied pigs.
  • demonstrate IV, SC, and IM injection locations and where to draw blood and place an IV catheter.
  • list drugs commonly used in pigs.

Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. To learn more about the requirements for earning a CE certificate, please refer to Receiving Your CE Credit and Course Completion Certificate.

About the Presenters:
Jean Feldman is a practicing veterinarian living in Western New York State. She started a mobile, large animal veterinary practice in 1985, caring for horses, llamas, cattle, pigs, sheep and goats. Her undergraduate work was done at D'Youville College (BA in Biology) and her DVM degree was conferred by Cornell University.

Stacey Byers obtained her DVM from Washington State University and completed her agriculture animal internship and residency at WSU as well. She is boarded in large animal internal medicine (ACVIM). Dr. Byers is an Associate Professor at St George's University School of Veterinary Medicine teaching in the Large Animal Medicine and Surgery Department. She also serves as a Consultant in the Ruminants and Swine folder on VIN. Previously Dr. Byers worked at Colorado State University in the Livestock Medicine and Surgery department and operated a livestock-oriented ambulatory practice.
