Course Information:
Stress affects us all and often seems unavoidable in our caring, service profession. The demands of work combined with our personal lives can feel overwhelming. This course will help participants learn techniques to recognize and manage pressures and stress. This course will also explore compassion fatigue and burnout.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
  • Understand the dangers of remaining in a constant state of stress.
  • Learn about compassion fatigue and signs of burnout.
  • Know how to reduce compassion fatigue.
  • Identify sources of stress.
  • Explore stress management techniques.
  • Consider silver linings, writing, intention and circles of influence.
  • Understand coping strategies.
  • Learn how time management can help minimize stress.
  • Learn about perspective and how it affects stress levels.
  • Consider and explore resilience.
Level and Prerequisites: This basic VSPN CE course will be open to veterinarians, veterinary technicians/technologists, and support staff interested in learning skills to manage and reduce stress in professional and personal life. The course will address compassion fatigue, burnout, and stress management techniques.

RACE Accreditation: This program has been approved for 3 hours of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize RACE approval.(20-861175)
This course has been approved for continual education units toward CVPM requirements through VHMA (19-83).

Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session January 12): Recognizing Stress
In this session we will discuss the dangers of remaining in a constant state of stress. We will learn about compassion fatigue and signs of burnout and how to reduce compassion fatigue. We will identify sources of stress and explore stress management techniques.

Week 2 (Real Time Session January 19): Managing and Preventing Stress
In the second session we will continue to explore stress management techniques. We will discuss silver linings, writing, intention and circles of influence and learn to understand coping strategies. We will explain how time management can help minimize stress, and learn about perspective and how it affects stress levels. Finally, we will consider and explore resilience.

Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. To learn more about the requirements for earning a CE certificate, please refer to Receiving Your CE Credit and Course Completion Certificate.

Course Materials: Course materials will be available in the course library prior to each Real Time Session.
