Level and Prerequisites: This basic course will be open to veterinarians, veterinary technicians/technologists, support staff, practice managers, veterinary teams, etc., actively interested in cultural competency, diversity and inclusion.

Course Description:
This course on cultural competency and diversity is meant to examine these topics and create an understanding of the importance of cultural competency in the workplace. During a time when the topics of race, equality and bias are in the news, leaders and team members will benefit from a greater awareness of diversity and inclusion practices.

Week 1 (Real Time Session Septmeber 15): Culture and Cultural Competence
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
  • Define culture and cultural competence.
  • Examine your cultural self-awareness.
  • Understand oppression, privilege, and importance of cultural awareness.
  • Examine leadership role in individual and organizational cultural competence.
Week 2 (Real Time Session September 22): Increasing Awareness and Understanding
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
  • Define concepts and terminology related to marginalized groups increase awareness and understanding.
  • Understand workplace policies and expectations regarding non-discrimination.
  • Understand applicable laws and regulations.
  • Explore attitudes and consider experiences of others.
  • Understand workplace professional communication.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

Required Textbook: There is no required textbook for this course.

About the Presenter:
Heather Howell, RVT, LVT, MBA is a credentialed veterinary technician in CA and NV. She received her BS in Animal Science at UC Davis and her MBA at the University of Nevada, Reno. Since 1988, she has worked in all capacities of the veterinary hospital including hospital administrator, practice management consultant, speaker, adjunct professor, and instructor. She is currently the Veterinary Services Manager of the largest single site open admission shelter in the USA, and consultant with Compliance and Training Consultants.

  1. Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
