Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate course will cover basic to advanced anesthetic techniques in reptile species commonly seen in companion animal practice including but not limited to snakes, lizards, and chelonians (turtles and tortoises).
VSPN CE Course: Open to to veterinary technicians/technologists.

Course Description:
This course will introduce credentialed veterinary technicians to both basic and advanced anesthesia techniques that can be utilized in common pet reptile species such as snakes, turtles, tortoises, and lizards. Basic anatomy and physiology, special anesthetic equipment, drug protocol selection, monitoring techniques, intravenous and intraosseous catheterization, and intubation techniques will be emphasized.

Week 1 (Real Time Session October 15): Overview of Reptilian Anatomy and Physiology and Anesthesia Drug Selection for Premedication, Induction and Maintenance Anesthesia
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to Week 2 (Real Time Session October 22): Equipment Selection for Anesthesia Delivery and Monitoring
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to Week 3 (Real Time Session October 29): Physical Examination and Venipuncture Techniques
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to Week 4 (Real Time Session November 5): In-Depth Discussion on IV and IO Catheterization, Fluid Therapy, Intubation, and Post-operative Recovery and Nursing Care
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Instructor:
Jody Nugent-Deal, RVT, VTS (Anesthesia/Analgesia, Exotic Companion Animal) has worked for the University of California-Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital since 1999, working in the companion exotics department for 10 years and currently the small animal anesthesia department where she is the supervisor. Ms. Nugent-Deal is a founding member of the Academy of Veterinary Technicians in Clinical Practice and is the executive secretary for the group as well as the appeals committee chair. Jody is an active member with the Academy of Veterinary Technicians in Anesthesia and Analgesia having served on the nominations, credentials and appeals committees. Jody is currently a Member At Large for the AVTAA. Jody also serves on the board for CaRVTA. Ms. Nugent-Deal has lectured throughout North America since 2000 on anesthesia and various exotic animal topics. Jody has published numerous articles and book chapters for both canine/feline and exotic animal medicine and anesthesia topics. Jody is an instructor for both VSPN, VetMedTeam and PennFoster Veterinary Technician Program. She has a special interest in anesthesia, analgesia, pain management and critical care in exotics and dogs and cats. In Jody�s spare time, she loves to read, visit the ocean, run, road and mountain bike.

  1. Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
  2. Each enrollee must be able to receive emails from @vspn.org and @vin.com addresses. Email is our major form of communication with participants; personal emails are highly recommended rather than clinic/hospital email addresses.
