Course RTS Times in Your Area: World Clock Converter Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate course is geared toward veterinary team members that want to learn tips and tricks to improve dental cleaning skills, advanced pathology, radiology positioning, pain management and anesthesia for dentistry patients.

This intermediate course is recommended for the veterinary technician that wants to take their dental skills to the next level. Skills will be taught that will help the participant be a better advocate for the proper standards of dental care for companion animals. The gold standard of performing a complete dental cleaning procedure to include full mouth radiographs and pain management techniques will be discussed. In addition, options to oral surgery (extractions) will be covered to properly inform participants of more advance procedures that can help save a tooth. Week 1 (Real Time Session June 23): 12 Steps to a Complete Dental Cleaning Procedure
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- demonstrate the essential steps that must be taken in each dental cleaning procedure.
- outline the need for proper techniques to ensure patient safety.
- point out why each step is important for the best outcome for the patient.
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- demonstrate what is necessary to obtain a diagnostic dental x-ray.
- utilize tricks to take dental x-rays in an easy and consistent manner.
- discuss basic interpretation of dental x-rays.
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- demonstrate the importance of a dedicated anesthetist for each dental procedure,
- illustrate how to place the four most commonly used regional dental nerve blocks.
- point out the importance of balance multimodal pain management for dental patients.
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- demonstrate when an advanced procedure may save a tooth.
- recognize when it is best to refer a patient to veterinary dental specialist.
- show basic procedures to better discuss options with pet owners.

Mary L. Berg, BS, LATG, RVT, VTS (Dentistry) Mary received her B.S. in Biology/Microbiology from South Dakota State University, her A.S. in Laboratory Animal Science from Redlands Community College, and her A.S. in Veterinary Technology from St. Petersburg College. She is a Charter member of the Academy of Veterinary Dental Technicians and received her Veterinary Technician Specialty in Dentistry in June 2006. Mary worked in research for over 25 years, specializing in on products aimed at improving oral health of companion animals and continues to work with companies to evaluate the efficacy of their products. In addition to her research background, she was the practice manager and dental specialist at a general practice for 8 years, teaches veterinary technology and is currently the president of Beyond the Crown Veterinary Education, a veterinary dental consulting service. Mary currently is serving as the Immediate Past President of the NAVTA, treasurer of the AVDT and a President of the KVTA. She has authored or co-authored over 70 publications including publications in the Journal of Dental Research, the Veterinary Technician Journal, the NAVTA journal and other publications as well as a speaker and wet lab instructor at numerous state and national conferences. - Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
