Course RTS Times in Your Area: World Clock Converter Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate course is focused toward individuals seeking to expand their knowledge of stabilization, developing an anesthesia plan, anesthesia monitoring and the recovery of these patients.

Anesthesia on healthy patients is not without complications and is too often taken for granted and performed without adequate planning or preparation. However, with any emergency presented to triage, a thorough pre-operative assessment must be performed, and patient assessment begins with the first step inside the door. The stressed and ill emergency patient will have altered physiological responses that will in turn alter the pharmacokinetics of the agents commonly used to provide anesthesia. This course is designed to assist you in your management of the most common emergent presentations that will need anesthesia. We will cover: Gastric dilatation–volvulus, feline urethral obstruction, dystocia and proptosis. Week 1 (Real Time Session May 7): Gastric Dilation and Volvulus
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- Show an understanding of the systemic effects and stabilization of the patient with GDV.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the means of developing a safe anesthesia and recovery plan for these patients.

- Demonstrate knowledge of the means of developing a safe anesthesia and recovery plan for these patients.

- Demonstrate knowledge of the means of developing a safe anesthesia and recovery plan for these patients.

Katy Waddell, LVT, VTS (ECC, Anesthesia & Analgesia) has been in the veterinary field for 44 years in small animal, mixed animal, specialty referral practices, 24/7 facilities, academia, and as an author. Katy retired from full time employment in 2017 and currently is a consultant providing in-clinic training, lecturing at local, state, national and international meetings, VSPN instructor and board moderator. Additionally, she has the pleasure of being the veterinary technician consultant for Hadukikai Animal Critical Care Center, Osaka, Japan. She also serves as the President elect of AVTAA and Member at Large for AVECCT. She is the proud recipient of the Texas Veterinary Medical Association 2013 Veterinary Technician of the Year Award as well as multiple Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Student Choice Awards for Best Teacher, Best Patient Advocate, and "Cat Whisperer".
