TECH293-1018: APRVT Rehabilitation Review

About the Instructors:
Deana Cappucci- Lorentz, BS, LVT, CCRVN, CCMT, VTS (Physical Rehab)-OC started her career as a veterinary technician shortly after graduating from the Arts working as a veterinary assistant in a kennel, not knowing where that path would take her. She studied Veterinary Technology at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, NY where she earned her Bachelors of Science in 2007, then took her VTNE to become a LVT that same year. Deana originally wanted to specialize in ER and Critical Care, but after a few years working in the fast-paced environment she wanted a change. In 2008, Deana relocated to Florida where she attended the Canine Rehabilitation Institute. After completion of her externship at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in NJ, she became a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Assistant (CCRA) in 2010 (currently now considered a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Veterinary Nurse, (CCRVN)). In 2011, Deana attended the Rocky Mountain School of Animal Acupressure and Massage, in Cape Coral, FL. She studied all three levels to become a Certified Canine Massage Therapist (CCMT). In early 2012, she attended the Chi Institute in Reddick FL, for training in Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine for Veterinary Technicians. Deana also worked at the Animal Medical Center in Manhattan as the Team Leader of the Rehab Department where she was responsible for teaching new students and externs that came into the program the way of canine rehabilitation. Deana is currently the lead nurse in the rehab department at Coral Springs Animal Hospital in Coral Springs, FL. She continues to have an integral role in teaching interns and externs the way of canine rehabilitation. She also lectures to veterinary professionals and veterinary technician students about the many benefits of canine rehabilitation. Deana sits on the Organizing Committee for the Academy of Physical Rehabilitation Veterinary Technicians, as the Executive Secretary and Continue Education Chair, and earned her VTS in Physical Rehabilitation in February 2017. Deana is also a member of the American Association of Rehabilitation Veterinarians, and the International Academy of Veterinary Pain Management. Deana is very passionate about her work, and she is enthusiastic about learning and teaching others.
Sandra Dowd BA, LVT, VTS (Physical Rehab-OC),), CCRP, CSMP started her career in veterinary medicine in 1992 as an ICU and critical care nurse while attending the veterinary technology program at The State University Of New York, Farmingdale. In 2000 Sandra joined Dr. Gal Vatash and Dr. Richard Rothman in the challenge of establishing a veterinary emergency and critical care center in Riverhead, New York. While working as the ICU technician supervisor, Sandra continued her education, receiving a Bachelor�s in Biology from Long Island University (2005). Her work in the ICU involved the care of patients suffering from prolonged illness and traumatic injury which encouraged her to begin investigating therapeutic techniques. This investigation led to The University of Tennessee Veterinary Physical Rehabilitation Department and fueled her desire to become a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner (2007) with additional certification in Canine Sports Massage (2008). As a result of her experiences, she was able to establish the Physical Rehabilitation Department at East End Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Center in 2008. Sandra remained Director of Physical Rehabilitation at East End Veterinary Center until 2018. Her desire to provide optimum care for patients led to additional course work in Canine Acupressure with the Tallgrass Animal Acupressure Institute, The University of Tennessee's Osteoarthritis Case Manager Course and Companion Animal Pain Management Program. In 2015 Sandra became an organizing Committee member of the Academy of Physical Rehabilitation Veterinary Technicians (APRVT). She retains the position of Industry and Public Relations Chairwoman in addition to working on the APRVT�s membership committee. Sandra�s goal is to continue her education in the field of Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation and to assist in educating the veterinary profession and public about the field of canine rehabilitation.
Dawn Hickey, LVMT, CCRP, CVPP, CCFT, VTS (Physical Rehab) graduated from Columbia State Community College with an AAS in Veterinary Technology. After a one-year internship at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, earning the Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner (CCRP) title, she was employed at Animalia Health and Wellness in Franklin, TN and was instrumental in the development of the rehabilitation practice there. In 2015, Dawn moved to Knoxville to become the lead technician in the Small Animal Rehabilitation Department at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. She completed the University of Tennessee�s Companion Animal Pain Management Certificate Program in 2016. In 2017, she became a Certified Veterinary Pain Practitioner (CVPP) and a Certified Canine Fitness Trainer (CCFT). She has received special training in Canine Myofascial Trigger points through Myopain Seminars. As an instructor in both the CCRP and CCFT programs, she enjoys teaching and spreading her love and enthusiasm for animal rehabilitation with students. Dawn is the veterinary technician liaison to the American Association of Rehabilitation Veterinarians (AARV) and is an active member of the Academy of Physical Rehabilitation Veterinary Technicians (APRVT) and the International Association of Veterinary Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy (IAVRPT). She is also an active member of NAVTA and the Tennessee Veterinary Technician Association (TVTA). Her particular areas of interest in physical rehabilitation include, geriatrics, neurology, working dogs, myofascial issues and pain management.
Maria Maddox, BA, CVT, LVT, CCRP, AMCP, VTS (Physical Rehab) has a B.A. in Biology and graduated with honors from Bel-Rea Institute in 2002. She helped establish the rehabilitation department in one of the country�s largest privately-owned veterinary hospitals in 2005. She earned her Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner status from the University of Tennessee in 2006. She has worked in the rehab field for over 8 years, mostly working hands-on with in-hospital and out-patient cases. She has lectured on rehab at the Oquendo Center in Las Vegas, Nevada as well as with VSPN. She has taught basic rehab techniques to technicians and assistants in Las Vegas and in Okinawa, Japan. She is a member of the organizing committee of the Academy of Physical Rehabilitation Veterinary Technicians (APRVT), and is the head of the membership committee of the APRVT.
Jenn Panko, RVT/CCRP, VTS (Physical Rehab), OCMC, CAPMC owns and manages The SPAW, a Canine Rehabilitation, Sports Medicine, and Fitness Centre in Aldergrove, British Columbia Canada in partnership with The Aldergrove Animal Hospital. She is a Registered Veterinary Technologist (Seneca College, Ontario 2005) where she was the recipient of The Veterinary Technology Recognition and Appreciation Award for dedication to and excellence in animal care. She completed The University of Tennessee�s Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner Program in 2006. In 2012 she completed the University of Tennessee�s Certified Osteoarthritis Case Management Program and was the recipient of The Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians Award of Merit for enhancing the image of the veterinary technology profession and a long standing history of community service. In 2014 she completed the University of Tennessee�s Companion Animal Pain Management Certificate Program. Her clinical experience includes a variety of work in private, referral, and academic companion animal practice, mobile, racetrack, and surgical equine practice, and wildlife rehabilitation. Jenn has a wide variety of experience in orthopedic, neurologic, weight loss, and conditioning rehabilitation. She developed her tool box of rehabilitation skills at The Mississauga-Oakville Veterinary Emergency Hospital and Referral Group coordinating CARE, The Companion Animal Rehabilitation Experts, Rehabilitation Service. She also managed The Neurology and MRI Service. Prior to her relocation to British Columbia she was part of the team at The Hill�s Pet Nutrition Primary Healthcare Centre, as a primary healthcare technician and coordinator of The Companion Animal Rehabilitation Service at The Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph. She is an Organizing Committee Member and The Communications and Information Technology Chair for The Academy of Physical Rehabilitation Veterinary Technicians and The Communications Director for The American Association of Rehabilitation Veterinarians and obtained her VTS in Physical Rehabilitation in 2017.
