Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate course will be open to veterinary technicians/technologists actively interested in furthering their knowledge in Small Animal Internal Medicine, the Thyroid Gland and the Parathyroid Glands.
Course Prerequisites: Participants should have a basic understanding of anatomy and physiology in the dog and cat, and medical terminology.

Course Description:
The thyroid and parathyroid glands play a pivotal role in maintaining homeostasis within the body. This intermediate course will present the physiology of both the thyroid and parathyroid glands. It will culminate with discussions of common diseases that plague these glands.

Week 1 (Real Time Session July 8): Thyroid Gland: Who, What,
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the purpose of the thyroid gland.
  • Show an understanding of the synthesis of thyroid hormones.
  • Show an understanding of the stepwise approach to the workup of patients with diseases of the thyroid gland.
Week 2 (Real Time Session July 15): Parathyroid Glands
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the purpose of the parathyroid gland.
  • Show an understanding of the stepwise approach to the workup of patients with diseases of the parathyroid gland.
  • Recognize the clinical signs of hypocalcemia.
Week Thyroid Diseases of the Cat (Real Time Session July 22): Thyroid Diseases of the Cat
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of common diseases that plague the thyroid of the cat.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of common therapies for these diseases.
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of I-131 treatment.
Week 4 (Real Time Session July 29): Thyroid Diseases of the Dog
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of common diseases that plague the thyroid gland of the dog.
  • Show a working knowledge of common therapies for these diseases.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Presenter:
Ashley DiPrete, RVT, VTS (SAIM) is currently the Internal Medicine Department Lead and the Technician Training Supervisor at Iron Horse Vet Care in Dublin California. She attended the Veterinary Technology program at the College of Southern Nevada and received her Registered Veterinary Technician license in 2009. In 2016 she earned her Veterinary Technician Specialty certification in Small Animal Internal Medicine. She currently is the Past - President of AIMVT (2019). In 2019 she also co-founded Internal Medicine for Pet Parents to support owners of pets with chronic medical conditions.
