Course Information:
The ability to perform veterinary calculations is essential for veterinary technicians and nurses. For many, a lack of confidence and understanding of how to solve such problems can lead to frustration and self-doubt. While certain calculators are available on the internet to help solve some veterinary problems, they do not teach you how to solve any other problem, thus reinforcing the lack of understanding. This course will cover the principles behind the dimensional analysis and how we can utilize them to simplify and solve veterinary calculations. We will start with a brief review of dosage problems as we explore dimensional analysis and then proceed into concentrations, dilutions, and fluid rates. A large part of the class will focus on constant rate infusions and how to approach them with confidence. We will explore different types of CRI’s from single drugs to multiple simultaneous infusions. This class aims to help build your confidence through knowledge and practice of various types of veterinary calculations.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

  • Understand dimensional analysis and how we can use it to simplify and solve veterinary calculations.
  • Convert a percent solution into a usable drug concentration.
  • Set up and determine how to solve dilutions we may run into during daily clinical practice.
  • Calculate fluid rates.
  • Calculate drip rates using a fluid administration set.
  • Calculate drip rates using a blood administration set.
  • Identify the required information to set up and calculate a constant rate infusion.
  • Calculate various types of constant rate infusions.
  • Calculate multiple CRIs for the same patient taking each into account.
  • Build confidence in your abilities to calculate CRIs.
Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VSPN CE course will be open for enrollment to veterinary technicians/technologists, support staff, veterinary teams, etc. with an interest in improving their mathematical skills.
Credit Approval: This program has been approved for 4.5 hours of continuing education credit in jurisdictions that recognize RACE approval.(20-893275)

Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session July 10): Concentrations, Dilutions, and Percent Solutions, Oh My!
The RTS will cover dimensional analysis and how we can use it to simplify and solve veterinary calculations. Additionally we will discuss converting a percent solution into a useable drug concentration and setting up and determining how to solve dilutions we may run into during daily clinical practice.

Week 2 (Real Time Session July 17): What the heck is a CRI, and why do you want me to calculate it?
The RTS will cover calculation of fluid rates, calculations of drip rates using a fluid administration set. Additionally we will cover the required information to set up and calculate a constant rate infusion

Week 3 (Real Time Session July 27): Yes, I Can Calculate that CRI for you, Doc!
In this RTS we will calculate multiple CRIs for the same patient taking each into account and thereby build confidence in the ability to calculate CRIs.

Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. To learn more about the requirements for earning a CE certificate, please refer to Receiving Your CE Credit and Course Completion Certificate.

Course Materials: Course materials will be available in the course library prior to each Real Time Session.
No Required Textbook.
