Course Information:
This course is designed to review what essential knowledge and skills veterinary technicians/technologists need to be prepared on day one working in the small animal emergency room setting. This course will focus on the concepts of triage, CPR, venous access, basic monitoring equipment (ECG, blood pressure), medical math, and the team approach to working and providing patient care in an emergency care environment (i.e. multi-tasking, asking questions).

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
  • Understand the triage process and perform triage on emergent patients.
  • Follow the RECOVER CPR guidelines to provide basic life support (BLS).
  • Calculate basic medical math, including drug dosages, fluid therapy rates, fluid additives, nutritional needs, and urine output.
  • Perform venous access on critically ill patients.
  • Setup, interpret, and monitor patients using ECG equipment.
  • Setup, interpret, and monitor patients using Doppler blood pressure equipment.
  • Utilize effective communication and team skills that will improve your ability to provide patient care in the emergency room.
Level and Prerequisites: This basic VSPN CE course will be open for enrollment to veterinary technicians/technologists and support staff seeking actively interested in working in emergency medicine.

RACE Accreditation: This program has been submitted (but is not yet approved) for 4.5 hours of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize RACE approval.

Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session January 13): Emergency Patient Triage
This real-time session will cover triage systems including implementation, classification, and phone triage.

Week 2 (Real Time Session January 20): CPR and Emergent Patient Care
This real time session will discuss all aspects of CPR and the RECOVER Initiative.

Week 3 (Real Time Session January 27): Medical Math and Team Dynamics
This real time session will cover the five ‘rights’ of drug administration and calculation (medication, IV fluid therapy, CRI, RER, urine output) and the importance of communication.

Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. To learn more about the requirements for earning a CE certificate, please refer to Receiving Your CE Credit and Course Completion Certificate.
