Course Information:
The ability to perform veterinary calculations is essential for veterinary technicians and assistants. For many, a lack of confidence and understanding of how to solve such problems can lead to frustration and self-doubt. While certain calculators are available on the internet to help solve some veterinary problems, they do not teach you how to solve any other problem, thus reinforcing the lack of understanding. This course will not cover shortcuts or formulas that you simply post on the wall and don’t have to think about, as these will not help you understand how to solve these problems. This course will cover the principles behind the dimensional analysis and how we can utilize it to simplify and solve veterinary calculations. This course will focus on the fundamentals, including converting units, dosage calculations, dilutions, fluid rates, etc. Detailed step-by-step calculations will be presented in the course library, during the real time sessions, and as calculations, for you to work on thru the message boards. The goal of this class is to help build your confidence through knowledge and practice of various types of veterinary calculations. I don’t expect everyone to love math the way that I do, but I do want to help those find the confidence in themselves to succeed in performing these essential veterinary calculations.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
  • Understand dimensional analysis and how we can use it to simplify and solve veterinary calculations.
  • Convert between imperial units and metric units.
  • Convert between different units within the same system.
  • Set up and calculate basic dosage calculations.
  • Convert a percent solution into a usable drug concentration.
  • Set up and determine how to solve dilutions we may run into during daily clinical practice.
  • Calculate fluid rates.
  • Calculate drip rates using a fluid administration set.
  • Build confidence in your own problem-solving abilities.
Level and Prerequisites: This basic VSPN CE course is open to veterinary technicians/technologists. .

RACE Credit Approval: This program has been aproved for 3 hours of continuing education credit in jurisdictions that recognize RACE approval. (20-935231)

Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session May 18):
Week 1 will delve into dimensional analysis and how we solve veterinary calculations. The focus will be on developing the fundamentals through practice problems involving conversions and dosage calculations.

Week 2 (Real Time Session May 25):
Week 2 will reinforce and continue to practice the principles discussed in week 1. We will proceed into dilutions, fluid rates, and more.

Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. To learn more about the requirements for earning a CE certificate, please refer to Receiving Your CE Credit and Course Completion Certificate.

Course Materials: Course materials will be available in the course library prior to each Real Time Session.
Required Textbook(s): There is no required textbook for this course.
