Kansas State University veterinarian seeks dogs with diarrhea for clinical study
Dr. Lisa E. Moore, Assistant Professor at Kansas State University's Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (KSU-VMTH), is conducting a study on chronic diarrhea in canine and feline patients. Research is based on a blinded study comparing the effects of two different foods formulated for canine or feline patients with gastrointestinal disorders. The study investigators will pay direct costs associated with patient screening and monitoring, as well as cost of the foods for the entire duration of the study. Travel expenses incurred by the client are not provided. The study will be conducted for approximately nine weeks.
Eligible canine participants for the study must demonstrate persistent chronic diarrhea for a minimum duration of one month or intermittent diarrhea for a minimum duration of three months. Patients with inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal bacterial overgrowth, Campylobacter or Clostridium spp., may be eligible for the study.
Excluded from the study are dogs and cats with any of the following: exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, pancreatitis, advanced renal or hepatic disease, gastrointestinal obstruction, evidence of food allergy, heart failure or infection with Histoplasma spp.
Moore will conduct an initial screening process of potential candidates at KSU including patient history, physical exam, serum and urine analysis, radiographs, ultrasound exam and fecal culture. A client consultation describing the study protocol and expectations of the client will be performed at this time. If the patient is deemed a qualified candidate and the dog's owner gives consent, the patient will be enrolled in the study. At time of discharge, the client will receive appropriate documentation for recording patient progress, food, and instructions for feeding.
