Identification of Genetic Risk in Shetland Sheepdogs with Gallbladder Mucocele Formation

Gallbladder mucocele formation has a strong breed predilection for Shetland sheepdogs in the U.S. No studies have attempted to identify the genetic basis for this disease. We propose to conduct a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to determine if regions of the genome are associated with mucocele formation in Shetland sheepdogs. Because diagnosis of mucocele formation is largely reliant on ultrasound and ultrasound can be difficult to interpret in many dogs with mucocele formation, we are seeking surviving Shetland sheepdogs that have undergone cholecystectomy for removal of a mucocele to serve as affected individuals for genetic sampling.

Study Design:
Prospective cross-sectional study

Sample Size:
50 Shetland sheepdogs having survived mucocele surgery

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Shetland sheepdogs currently living
  • Prior cholecystectomy for removal of a gallbladder mucocele
  • Ultrasound images and histopathology report available

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Dogs of other breeds
  • Shetland sheepdogs that have not undergone cholecystectomy

Study Controls:
N/A

Samples:
Copy of ultrasound and histopathology report for gallbladder mucocele surgery. EDTA blood sample (at least 2 cc), refrigerated and shipped to arrive Monday through Friday. Please email Dr. Jody Gookin with ultrasound and histopathology report for pre-screening of candidate dogs, before submitting samples.

Costs/Reimbursements:
Shipping of sample paid for by study investigators
